Try Healthy Eating - Use the Diabetic Diet

Until we put on a lot of weight or get other illnesses we think that we can eat and digest anything. Diabetic people have problems that they can usually solve by eating a healthy diet. However, many foods on the restricted list for diabetics are also great for us all.

The diabetic diets can accomplish these three things:
1. Achieve our ideal weight by eating right and eliminating the unhealthy food from our diet.
2. Maintain normal blood glucose levels. This will help you feel energized and not hungry.
3. Limit foods that contribute to heart disease.

Many diabetic diets focus on carbohydrates, and these are composed of starches, sugars and fibre. Of course, starches are often referred to as complex carbohydrates. However the important thing to pay attention to is the total carbohydrates you eat. It encompasses all three types of carbohydrates and gives you the total amount eaten.

However, before starting on any diet check with your doctor and ask about how much calories you need to consume daily. This varies from person to person. For losing weight it is as important to consume only the amount of calories your body can burn.

Some basic principles of the diabetic diet.
1. We get 50 to 60% of our daily calories from carbohydrates. Limit your eating of products made from white flour as whole grains and multigrain are more nutritious. Eat raw food and fresh fruits and vegetables for your carbohydrates. Eat the less starchy vegetables.
2. 12 to 20% of the calories we eat comes from protein. Eat lean meats. These include: skinless turkey and chicken; fish and other seafood; lean cuts of pork and beef. Pork loin and beef sirloin are best cuts. Marbled cuts may be tastier but they contain much fat. Other foods include eggs, tofu, low-fat cheese and some nuts.
3. It is best to eat 5 to 6 times a day in small portions as this keeps the blood glucose more level. As a result you will feel less food cravings and feel full all day.

The diabetic diet does allow you to eat sweets and if you do come them as carbohydrates. This is a very sensible well-balanced diet that can help you lose weight.
