It isn't easy to see a parent, grandparent, friend or relative cope with the aging process. There may be problems such as physical limitations, cognitive memory losses and aloneness. They will tell you about close friends that have died and may also be feeling very isolated. Also, there may be questions about living one's own home or needing to move in with a relative. If that isn't available then there may be important choices to be made about a nursing home , senior residential center or assisted living facility.

If you are a close family member, have a talk with them and find out their wishes. They may want to stay in their home, but
you may also find that they are not able to perform daily tasks properly. Are they taking their medication? Are they eating properly? Do they stay in bed all day? What is their lifestyle like? If they have a long term health policy another option can be that they have an aid come into the home. This can be part-time or full-time depending on their level of health as well as the policy's rules. There can also be confusion and the elderly person may one day seem receptive to changing their living situation and next day turn around and say the opposite. You yourself may feel very emotional seeing the changes in a loved one.

Try to spend time and just hold the person's hand and let them know you care. This means more than anything to someone. Be able to joke around as well and give them space to talk about their true concerns. Also, if no plans were made about the funeral, this is an important thing to take care of. It doesn't mean they may not have a good number of years left, but these things need to be arranged now rather than wait till a time when it is urgent.
