Heartburn or acid reflux is great discomfort to many individuals; however there are many remedies that can be found right from your kitchen. Many people experience heartburn for several reasons and oftentimes, they may not recognize the symptoms at first. The contributory factors of acid reflux often seem too harmless to recognize. For instance, drinking too many caffeinated and carbonated drinks will eventually cause heartburn. Your beloved chocolate, after satisfying your sweet cravings, will very likely cause too much acid build-up and cause the distress of heartburn. Moreover, eating a heavy meal right before bedtime will very likely engender indigestion and cause excess acid in the stomach to rise to the esophagus.

If you have already begun to experience the annoyance that is heartburn, fix yourself a nice cup of herbal tea. Fennel seeds are known for their effectiveness in treating acid reflux, and you can add a bit of mint to your tea to give it a more pleasant taste. Ginger tea also offers excellent relief, added with a bit of honey for flavor. Almonds are also known to relieve gastric acid, and chewing a few almonds may help in alleviating this condition. Moreover, you can also try a baking soda concoction by adding a teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water. Slowly drink the mixture until you feel that you've already had enough.

You can also try lying on your left side to expel the excess acid and the gas out. However, one of the simplest and cheapest ways to treat heartburn would be to eat an apple. Consuming an apple actually neutralizes the distressing acids in your stomach, thus relieving you of your heartburn problems. The natural antacids and fiber present in apples can deliver a most potent and immediate effect in curing your acid reflux condition. Eating a small apple after dinner or after each meal will help in preventing problems each time.

Other natural remedies you can try:

1. Drink a cup of whole milk to treat the burning sensation.
2. Eat 1 slice of bread with no spread and drink 1 cup of cold water.
3. When you suffer from heartburn, eat almonds.
4. Pickles or pickle juice are very good when suffering from heartburn.
5. Eat bananas.
6. Chew peppermint gum for a few minutes.
7. Drink ginger tea with small sips.
8. When having bad heartburn eat plain yogurt.
9. Eat dry plain crackers and drink 1 cup of water.
10. Drink plain soda whenever you get heartburn.

Finally, there are over the counter medications for acid reflux that you can stock your medicine cabinet with so you won't have to head for the doctor every time you feel excess acid discomfort. Antacids normally come in pill and liquid form, and these provide almost immediate relief from heartburn. Depending on what works best for you, you can purchase the pill or liquid antacids from any drugstore. Heartburn is not meant to be a serious condition, and by keeping a few quick relief medications and natural remedies, you will certainly be feeling better for a long time.
