Just because there is an order for child support, doesn't mean that the person responsible will do as they're told and pay up. Whether you're behind on your child support payments, or your ex-wife hasn't coughed up her portion, you do have options in having your child support payments paid. Most states have what's called an "Office of Support Enforcement." This office is typically a free service that can be utilized by a parent that has not received child support payments as they were ordered to. If the other party lives outside the state, the Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement Act is on their side. They can be reached by contacting the local district attorney. These services will track down the person responsible for the back pay and will take certain steps to ensure that the money is paid up. Along with threats of revoking personal licenses and wage garnishment, these enforcement offices can also dangle jail time in front of those failing to meet their financial obligations when it comes to their children. If you are on the business end of the enforcement offices, it is important to know that working with them to settle an issue will benefit you extremely as opposed to avoiding or ignoring them. As long as you are making an effort to work things out, you should stay on their good side and avoid any annoying or costly circumstances. When trying to collect child support payments from your ex, be sure to utilize the free assistance that is available to you. And if you're the one that's behind on payments, do not avoid the Office of Support Enforcement—work with them on making an arrangement before going off into hiding and risking jail time.
