Minoxidil is a drug that has long been available on the market for the treatment of hypertension. The drug has however recently been introduced for the treatment of hair loss and baldness. The fact that this drug can be used in treating hypertension and at the same time baldness leaves someone themselves the question, how does minoxidil work? Well, Minoxidil as a hair loss treatment drug acts in such a way that it dilates the blood vessels that supply hair follicles on the scalp. When these blood vessels dilate it increases the total amount of blood that reaches these hair follicles. As a result more oxygen and nutrients are delivered to the hair follicles allowing them to increase the rate of production of hair. This will not only encourage hair growth, but it will also encourage hair follicles to retain hairs in the anagen phase for a much longer period, allowing the hair strands to thicken and become much stronger. Minoxidil also opens up some potassium channels which are linked to speeding up the shedding of telogen hairs and bringing on new hair growth. When the drug is used to treat baldness, it stops the continued early shedding of hair. Minoxidil retards the entrance of hairs into the telogen phase. This will cause hair follicles to retain the hairs for a much longer period thus allowing the hairs to thicken and become more resistant to breaking. Minoxidil can be used to treat baldness in the following way. If you are experiencing hair loss the best way will be to go on a nutrient rich diet that will promote hair growth. You will have to make sure that your diet is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals. Once a good diet has been guaranteed the rest is up to minoxidil. Minoxidil will ensure that all the nutrients that are absorbed through the diet are channeled to hair follicle maintenance and hair growth. Minoxidil will dilate the hair follicles thus allowing more blood to reach the hair follicles. This will mean that more oxygen reaches the hair follicles thus allowing them to increase their metabolic rate. An increased metabolic rate will mean that more energy will be expended to produce more hair strands which will help reduce hair thinning. Increased blood supply to the scalp will also mean that toxins will be detoxified at a much faster rate thus not giving them any chance to accumulate and affect hair follicle function. When toxins are removed from the scalp hair follicles will be able to maintain good hair growth and hairs will stay longer in the anagen phase thus causing the scalp to shed fewer hairs per day. This is one of the ways in which minoxidil stops balding. The efficiency of minoxidil in treating baldness can also be supported by exercise. Exercising also improves the circulatory system, thus making sure that all hair follicles are well nourished and good hair growth is maintained all the time.
