Just how much EPA and DHA should you take has been the subject of many debates! However, all the latest research shows us that while both are important omega 3 fatty acids, it is DHA which provides most of the benefits. Let me show you how to get the right balance.

The best known source of these fatty acids is cold water oily fish as vegetable sources like flaxseed give you ALA fats which, despite many people who try to tell you otherwise, are not as useful and are rarely, if ever, converted into DHA or EPA.

It is the anti-inflammatory properties they have that are responsible for most of the health benefits, especially heart and brain health.

What makes inflammation so deadly is that it sneaks up on you and over time and you are not aware that anything is wrong until it's too late. This is potentially preventable with quality supplement.

Taking a daily DHA supplement is estimated to save thousands of lives every year especially when you consider that over 90% of us are deficient in omega 3 as we need to get it from our diet and cannot manufacture it ourselves.

So, how much EPA and DHA should you take for the maximum rewards?

A ratio of at least 2:1 DHA to EPA is best and as an example the one I personally take contains 1000mg of oil of which 280mg is DHA and 120mg is EPA, and I take 2 a day.

You will find almost all on the market have higher EPA levels as it is cheaper to make so check out the website or label to see the individual levels before you go any further.

It is important to ensure any supplement you choose has been molecularly distilled to get rid of any remaining toxins like mercury, PCB's and lead and leave only pure concentrated oil with an even higher omega 3 content.

The best source at the moment is the Hoki fish from the pristine waters of Southern New Zealand as it is naturally high in DHA and low in contaminants and comes from a sustainable source.

I hope this clarifies for you just how much EPA and DHA should you take daily to ensure you receive the maximum health benefits possible to help you live a longer and healthier life, avoiding many of the more deadly diseases later on.
