Most people have dreams. The question is how do you make the dreams come true? The answer to that question is to turn your dreams into goals. Just as it would be impossible for a footballer to score a goal if there weren't any goal posts so it is nearly impossible to achieve your dreams without setting goals. What are dreams?  What exactly are goals? How do you make a dream a goal? Questions answered in this article.

Successful people are usually goal setters. Start by letting yourself dream. It is unfortunate some education systems punish students for day dreaming. So people can often feel guilty when they dream and can think it a waste of time. Yet it is the first step toward achieving what you want in life.

Tip: Start with small dreams and goals. Take baby steps when setting your life goals. For example complete this project by such and such a date, this could be your education or an assignment.

Allow yourself to dream

Allocation a time slot in each day and allow yourself to dream. During this time place no limits on your dreams. Imagine what sort of lifestyle you would like. What sort of person would you like to be? What sort of job would you like to have? What sort of person you would like to marry? What knowledge you want to have?

Turn your dream into a goal?

The questions above can help you to work out what you want. When you have worked out what you want then dream, visualize the results. You may want to buy a home, become an interior designer or a doctor. But it takes more than dreams to achieve what we want. It takes clearly defined goals.

Clearly define your goal

Clearly define what you want to achieve, for example to own your own home. What sort of home?  How many bedrooms? How big? Do you want a garden? How much do you want to pay? Where do you want your home located? Build up a clear picture of what you want. Find images of homes you like. Once you have an idea of what you want and how much it will cost, work out how you can get the money. Then put a time frame on the goal.

Tip: You may be a student if so your first goal would be to get a job then save the money for a deposit. Or the dream of a home of your own may be in the future. You may have to work on other goals first.

Write your goal down

It is important to work out if you have conflicting goals. If you do work out which goal is more important to you. Goals can be set for many areas in your life – work, relationships, spiritual, pleasures, education, personal development, health and physical development. If you want to be in control of your life then you must decide what you want and how you are going to achieve it. Most people don't do this.

In summary

  • Work out what you want (make sure it is your goal not someone else's)
  • Dream and visualize (find an image to keep the dream in focus)
  • Work out how you will achieve your goal (How much will it cost? How can you get the money? Save?)
  • Clearly define your goal (You want a house with 3 bedrooms…)
  • Write your goal down in detail
  • Create a time frame to achieve the goal (put a date on your goal)
  • List the things you need to do to achieve your goal (save ….. money by …. date. Learn a skill…)

Most people don't plan their day yet alone their life. If you take the time to dream, set goals and most important write your goals down you are more likely to get what you want out of life. It has been estimated 97 % of the population do not reach their full potential. Some psychologists say goals are necessary in order to cope with everyday stress. And dreaming  is the starting point. Happy Dreams
