Want to know the truth about most facial moisturizers?  The average facial cream does not even contain moisturizing ingredients.  For years, the big cosmetic companies have been selling us products that are loaded with petrochemicals that actually make our skin drier than before.  Here’s what you need to look for, if you want something better.

The label of ingredients is the only honest source of information that you have.  The problem is that it can be difficult to understand.  Cosmetic companies don’t like to be descriptive.  They choose to use broad terms like “fragrance.”  There could be any number of hazardous chemicals used to create that scent.

Most facial moisturizers contain petrolatum, mineral oil and/or paraffin wax.  None of these are moisturizing.  When used continuously, they actually make the skin drier, clog the pores and interfere with the skin’s natural rejuvenation processes.  Their composition is not much different from petroleum jelly.  Most of you realize how greasy that feels.

The better (more expensive) facial cream on the market contains glycerin, which is somewhat moisturizing, but some companies make the mistake of including petrolatum or its counterparts, along with the glycerin and that’s counterproductive.  Glycerin has been shown in laboratory studies to increase the skin’s moisture content by about 5% on the average.

The best facial cream does not leave a greasy feeling and it can be used by all skin types, because it doesn’t clog the pores.  Rather than interfering with the skin’s rejuvenation processes, it stimulates and supports them.  One of the ingredients to look for is a form of bio-active keratin.  It may be listed as SYNERGY TK or Functional Keratin.

Keratin is the protein that makes up 95% of the cells in the epidermis.  The epidermis is composed of four to five layers of skin.  Beneath that, you have the dermis, where collagen and elastin fibers are found.  Beneath that, you have a fatty layer of tissue.

In the past, a number of facial moisturizers have contained keratin, but the processes used to make it soluble basically destroyed it.  The skin’s cells could not use it.  Functional Keratin is “active” so that the skin’s cells can use it.  In clinical studies, it has been shown to be five times more effective than glycerin.  After several weeks, it actually improved the skin’s ability to retain moisture.  Basically, that means it “heals” dry skin.

Collagen has become a common ingredient in facial cream.  Companies used to refer to it as gelatin, until the word collagen became recognized.  But, regardless of what they call it, it is still gelatin.

Facial moisturizers that contain collagen are not worth the money that you would spend on them.  It’s more of an advertising gimmick than anything else.

If you want the best thing for your skin’s health, look for facial cream that is free of artificial preservatives and added fragrances.  The next step is to look for ones that contain Functional Keratin.  Until recently, facial moisturizers hadn’t changed much over the last 50 or 60 years.  Finally, things are starting to improve.
