The very word, 'addict', means a "person who is given up to a habit, especially something bad or harmful". Here lies the seriousness of the problem. We find an ever-increasing number of alcohol addicts now-a-days who are far more sophisticated and serious than De Quincey's "English opium-eater" or Bankimchandra's opium-addict, "Kamalakanta".

Causes may be many and diverse. Parental neglect, frustration, imitation of the West, social indiscipline may be some of the causes. Many people drink alcohol for happiness, they feel themselves proud; they think that by drinking alcohol they will become a real man. For these reasons selling of alcohol is increasing every day.

The harmful effects can better be imagined than described. The growing habits of an addict shatter him physically as well as mentally. The youth, supposed to be the backbone of the society, live in the land of 'lotus-eaters' and the society becomes crippled. We know that health is our best possession, it is our best wealth. We should gain and preserve it very carefully. It is the source of all our joy and happiness in life. Unless we have a healthy body, we cannot have a healthy mind. But continuous use of alcohol affects your health, a lot. People find the source of their joy and happiness from alcohol. But to be physically sound and mentally care-free is to be far away from it.

As prevention is better than cure, the addiction should be eradicated forthwith. So, alcohol rehabilitation is necessary for addicts.

As stop-gap measures, the addicts should be medically treated and properly rehabilitated after reformation. Now-a-days many good, well designed rehabilitation centers are present those provide complete and proper care and professional guidance for ever patients. These centers are specially designed for alcohol addicted patients. There are some alcohol rehab services that provide treatment at free of cost for public benefit.
Some famous alcohol rehabilitation centers are following with phone number and official website.

Some other steps should also be taken for the cure of alcohol addiction such as systematic propaganda, and strong and effective administrative measures. Parents, teachers and social workers should come forward to carry on a concerted crusade against the evil and they should also stand beside the alcohol addict patients as their supports to make sure that they will get the remedy from addiction. It is now a global problem and as such should be tackled on a war footing. The sooner we get rid of it, the better. There are several steps which are taken by the government institutions to get rid of this problem and one of them is rehab centers. According to recent reports and studies there are many people who got rid of addiction problem with the help of these centers and programs.
