If you're like me, you probably routinely use the little key ring attachment to lock up after you park your car, then walk away feeling safe and secure, right? Unfortunately in this age of constant assault on normalcy this is no longer the case. It seems as though the latest criminal trick is to lurk nearby and electronically intercept your security code as it whizzes through the air. After you've left the vicinity the bad guys use the code to casually open your auto and steal things from you. The solution is simple. When you exit your car even for just a few minutes you should use the manual door lock inside your vehicle. The security code is not sent and the crooks have no clever modern way to break in, and are thus left with traditional options involving the sound of breaking glass, or suspicious activity such as the use of a "slim jim". Current news reports indicate that the majority of thieves are using this technique to steal items from the car without attracting attention, maximizing their take without incurring a grand theft auto charge. Many people routinely leave items of value, including small expensive gadgets, in their locked automobile as they go about the business of the day. Of course, once inside the thief may choose to hot-wire and steal your wheels along with everything inside. This is not to say that you should get rid of your locking remote, as it certainly comes in handy when unlocking your vehicle. When locking and leaving it is advisable to hold the keys in your hand (so you don't lock yourself out!), use the manual lock feature usually located on your door panel, exit and shut the door, then put your keys away. It might not be a bad idea to invest in a key ring attachment of pepper spray for an added measure of security. Criminal attacks happen often when folks are distracted with a mundane task that diverts their attention. Sadly, whenever times are tough, crime rates rise as an unnervingly high number of people would rather put their attention and energy into nefarious activities when just a little effort in the opposite direction would make the world a better place. Vigilance and determination to rise above would appear to be a good person's last line of defense.
