How to make small talk – this seems to be one of the hardest things to do! On one hand, it just seems so simple to talk to a random person. After all, who wouldn't appreciate a ready companion to pass the time with on a boring day? But on the other hand, it may just feel awkward to engage with another person, without any guarantee that he or she will be interested with what you're saying.
A conversation, even a small one, is still a risk: so better learn how to make small talk successfully!
Make eye contact and smile.
Everyone appreciates a friendly face. Maintain a happy disposition to send the signal that you're approachable and nice. People are more likely to converse with those they perceive to be congenial, than those they consider as either aloof or in a rush. If how to make small talk is your problem, then looking happy may help solve it– others may initiate the conversation for you!
Approach others naturally; this means adopt a relaxed posture and just be yourself! Don't worry too much about whether or not people will like you; have the confidence that you have something to offer, and go from there. Remember: everyone has insecurities; others are just better at hiding them.
Comment on something interesting.
You don't have to grab random topics out of the blue – talk about the cool shoes the other person is wearing, her clear blue eyes, or the nice interesting shirt he has on! You can focus on the book he is holding, or the canvas bag she is toting around. By grounding the topic on something familiar, the other person will feel comfortable commenting on it. Making the space open for opinion will be something good to push the conversation and that is how to make small talk at its best.
Introduce yourself and include an amusing tidbit.
Don't be boring when you talk about yourself – try to include an interesting trait that the other person may find interesting. That tidbit should be something people would not have imagined about you, or something you have surprisingly accomplished. Do you love sci-fi movies and novels (despite not looking like a geek) or have you ever bungee jumped in your life (despite not looking like a sports buff)? If yes, then you will amaze the other person! Just make sure you do not sound conceited, but just as an individual sharing something to another. This is how to make small talk interestingly.
Compliment the other person and thank him or her for the time.
Be sure to say how gracious the acquaintance is, and how much you appreciate the attention. Keep it short and simple, so that the other person sees your sincerity and will not simply dismiss it as an effort to impress him or her.
Upon reading this, you'll see that how to make small talk is not such a hard feat to accomplish. You can make new friends this way effectively, without any awkwardness or discomfort. After all, a day is nicer with a new friend by your side!
