For those individuals with allergies to specific bedding fabrics, dust mites and the scent of laundry detergents on bed sheets, there are a number of methods to minimize these reactions. Here are some tips that will help you achieve this goal. Look for sheets, linens, pillows and mattress covers that can be washed frequently using unscented laundry detergent. You may need to wash these items on a weekly basis to properly ensure removal of allergens. One method to control dust-mite is to spray the bedding once every six months with a neutralizing solution. Read the directions on the product before you spray because there are some bedding fabric and linens that may discolor when introduced to a chemical solution. Another concern is the neutralizing solution may not penetrate adequately through the mattress padding. The solution to this would be using a vinyl mattress along with pillow protectors to seal off the dust mites. In addition, using a 100% cotton cloth that is untreated will also be equally effective. Some people prefer the synthetic allergy bedding while others like the feel of a natural cotton fiber. One added benefit when using synthetic bedding is the durability of this material especially after many wash cycles. Your preference in materials will determine which choice is best for you. Other factors that can reduce allergens and dust-mites is maintaining a clean room. For instance, items such as windows, blinds, furniture, floors, carpet and curtains should be cleaned on a regular basis. Doing this will help to minimize dust-mite populations. Also, maintaining a room with a lower humidity level can also reduce dust-mites. Generally, keeping the bedroom humidity at or below 40% is an optimal setting. Following these tips will help remove allergens from the room.
