Bad breath or Halitosis is a common internal disorder associated with mouth and throat odor. Such kinds of bad odours basically include the smell of rotting eggs, the smell of ammonia in case of chronic kidney failure or the fruity smell related with diabetic ketoacidosis. Bad breath could be extremely embarrassing and can create social, emotional and psychological stress in an individual.

Causes of Bad breath

  • A major cause of Bad breath is the consumption of tobacco, unhealthy diet and chronic dry mouth. In a majority of cases, Bad breath originates in the mouth mainly owing to insufficient plaque control, periodontal disease, faulty restorations and excessive bacterial growth on the tongue.
  • Gingivitis is also a prominent cause of Bad breath. Bacteria that cause Gingivitis live in your plaque. This, will, ultimately result in the inflammation and bleeding of gums and their separation from teeth.
  • Bacteria generally consume food and excrete wastes in the form of sulfur compounds. The volatile sulfur compounds might lead to periodontal health and disease, which could subsequently cause Bad breath.
  • Another most probable cause of Bad breath is digestive disturbance caused by an unhealthy diet. Such an improper diet could lead to constipation. Overeating can also cause both flatulence and halitosis.
  • Individual foods, stress and anxiety and heavy metal poisoning could also be some of the factors that cause halitosis.

Few steps to treat Bad breath

  • Try to avoid inappropriate food combination such as citrus and complex carbohydrate, mixing fruits and vegetables etc.
  • Increase the intake of fiber foods and avoid excessive consumption of sugar, refined carbohydrates, milk and meat. These foods could aggravate oral diseases, digestive problems and constipation.
  • Brush and floss your teeth regularly.
  • Drink 6 - 8 glasses of water daily. This will help in increasing the production of saliva. However, ensure that you do not drink with meals so as to avoid enzyme dilution.

  • Consume a multi vitamins and minerals tablet regularly. This significantly helps in regulating the bowel movement as well as supplies the ingredients necessary for the production of digestive enzymes.
