Many people are plagued with acne and the scars it leaves behind. Promising sufferers a beautiful, smooth complexion is big business, and there are a lot of companies trying to cash in on this embarrassing condition. However, there are many options when trying to reduce acne scars, and the answer may not be in a tiny, expensive bottle full of chemicals.
One effective, natural way to reduce acne scars is with tomatoes. Tomatoes are full of Vitamin A and Vitamin C and are powerful antioxidants. Tomatoes are also easy to obtain and inexpensive. Many of the products that are marketed for treating acne scars are made from the compounds found naturally in tomatoes.
The way the tomato reduces acne scars is through its ability to promote cellular regeneration - the growth of new skin cells. Vitamin A, which is found abundantly in tomatoes, reduces sebum on the skin, which is the substance that causes pores to clog in the first place. The antioxidants in tomatoes rejuvenate the skin, causing it to be healthier and have a much smoother appearance.
Using tomatoes for acne scar treatment at home can be as simple as cutting a tomato in half and rubbing it on the affected areas, allowing the juice to sit upon the skin for about 10 minutes before rinsing away. Doing this daily will achieve the best results.
Tomatoes may also be mixed with other ingredients to make a mask. First, peel the tomato by cutting a cross at the top of the tomato and dropping it in boiling water for one minute. The skin will then easily slip off. The tomato should be seeded by scooping the seeds out with a spoon. Next, it may be pureed in a blender or mashed with a fork. This makes a very effective mask on its own, or it can be mixed with other ingredients that are known for their skin rejuvenating properties such as cucumber, honey, yogurt, oatmeal, almond meal, egg white, avocado, lemon juice, lime juice, or olive oil. These masks may be left on for up to an hour and will be most effective if used after opening the pores on the skin with steam.
