If you're wonderinghow to save money on organic meat, you're not alone. Many families would like to eat better foods while still living frugally and saving money on their grocery bills. It may seem that all the deals are on processed foods and junk items -- but that's really not the case. There are many creative ways to save money on organic meat, chicken, and eggs.

  • Buy organic, free-range beef by the half or quarter steer. Don't have a large freezer? Split it with a friend and share the savings. Look for farmers and ranchers following sustainable practices through eatwild.com.
  • Check out local farmer's markets for in-season deals on vegetables as well as eggs, pastured chicken, beef, lamb, pork and other farm fresh products.
  • Join a CSA (community supported agriculture) group to get farm prices on organic meats of your choice, depending on what the farmers offer. Go to localharvest.org to find a local CSA.
  • Raise backyard chickens as broilers to save money on orgnaic meat, or for their eggs to have fresh, top quality eggs at a fraction of the cost of store bought.
  • Barter with an organic meat producer, such as a local farmer or chicken grower, to really save money on organic meat. What skills do you have that could benefit the local grass-based beef operation? Can you build a website or landscape their house? Make an offer and barter to find a win-win deal.
  • Check the meat aisle and organic section of local supermarkets in the early morning to find manager's markdown specials. You can save money on organic meat at the store this way; sometimes up to 50% off the original price. Be sure to freeze whatever you don't intend to use within a day.

Between buying in bulk directly from ranchers, looking for deals at farmer's markets, and scouring the grocery store for early-morning manager specials, it is possible to learn how to save money on organic meat, poultry and eggs. Also, stretch your meats by serving smaller meat portions with each meal and including several side dishes, especially properly prepared grains such as pre-soaked rice and sprouted wheat products. This approach will help you eat well while still living frugally.
