If you've been suffering from tinnitus for a while, first of all you'll know that how hard it is to fall asleep at night; you now have to deal with insomnia in addition to ringing ears. Without having a good night rest, you won't be able to concentrate on your work the next day, thus affecting your productivity.

Over time, your energy reserves are depleted, you become physically and mentally drained, your work and relationships are affected, you just feel so stressed out and depressed. In the end your tinnitus becomes worse than before!

Therefore, the first thing any tinnitus sufferer would want to learn is how to stop ringing ears , so that they can fall asleep at night. You'll need lots of energy and a healthy state of mind to deal with ringing ears, and also to maintain the quality of your life.

Below are several things you can do to stop ringing ears, or at least soften it down to allow you to fall asleep.

Get some exercise

Regular exercise is necessary for everyone to keep healthy, but is especially important for those suffering from ringing ears. Exercise improves blood circulation, aid in toxin elimination, and supply important nutrients to your brain and auditory system.

In addition, exercise helps to lower your stress level and take loads off your mind. When you exercise, your body releases a biochemical called endorphins that will increase pain thresholds and make you feel better. If you want to get a good night's sleep, then include an exercise routine to your life; it doesn't have to be intensive, just keep it at 20 minutes each time, and at least three times weekly.

Sound-masking treatments for tinnitus

You can 'hide' the frustrating sounds of tinnitus with tinnitus maskers or tinnitus instruments. What tinnitus instruments do is to take your mind off the ringing in your ears; they do not stop the ringing though.

A tinnitus masker is an apparatus that is put into the ear canal and send out a sound (e.g. sounds of rainfall, waves and running water, etc) designed to keep your mind off the sound of tinnitus.

A tinnitus instrument consists of a tinnitus masker and a hearing aid that magnify external sound to divert your attention from the ringing in your ears or head. Tinnitus instruments are more effective in masking tinnitus. You can switch off the hearing aid, but leave the masker on when you want to sleep.

Take food or supplements that help you fall asleep more easily (but not sleeping pills!)

While following the right type of diet and taking supplements may not stop ringing in your ears, but it can be very useful in taking you to your dreamland. Some of the tinnitus natural remedies known to aid natural sleeping include:

=> Chamomile – promotes a general sense of well-being. It's soothing and relaxing, and will help you fall asleep more easily. Drink a cup of chamomile tea before going to bed.

=> Black cohosh - known to have pain-relieving and relaxing properties.

=> Tryptophan - aids better sleep. It can be found in a number of foods, including turkey and milk. The tryptophan in milk is released when it is heated. No wonder infants get back to sleep immediately after their milk feedings. Drink a glass of warm milk before bedtime.

One or more of the methods mentioned above should be able to help you get a good night's sleep. Once you begin to sleep well, you'll notice a great reduction in ringing ears.
