Oftentimes, people complain about the sound or noise that they hear on their ears or head. If you are one of these people, don't fret because that's just Tinnitus.
Tinnitus is the noises or sounds that originate from your head or ear. These sounds often come from any of the four parts of the hearing organ: the middle ear, the inner and the outer ear. The sounds could also be coming from the brain. Some head noises are actually normal but are just masked by outside noise that's why you can't hear them.
Tinnitus is actually of different types. The most common type include the sounds that crickets made and other whistling, roaring, buzzing, hissing and high-pitched ringing sounds. The sound could also be clicking or pulsatile, which is a noise or sound accompanying your heartbeat. This ear condition could also be classified as subjective, which only allows you to hear the sound; and objective tinnitus, which includes sounds that could be heard by your doctor or other people.
Although not considered as a serious disease, people still complain about tinnitus as it could be an irritating condition. They still go to their doctors to learn how to stop ringing in ears, or the swishing or buzzing sounds that interfere with their hearing.
There is not a single treatment for tinnitus as the medical approaches vary according to the causes of the ear condition. For instance, if the condition is a symptom of an underlying health issue, the main disease or illness is treated first for tinnitus to be relieved. Oftentimes, tinnitus is not treated as it is a condition that goes away. This is especially observed in pregnant women. Yes, pregnancy is listed as one of the causes of tinnitus, so once women go past this stage, tinnitus may resolve on its own.
But while other people find this as a nuisance that will eventually go, other people find it extremely annoying and disturbing that their daily activities are affected. Yes, even studies have revealed that some 12 million Americans experience severe tinnitus; hence, some treatment options are usually ruled out by doctors:
• Use of antidepressant or anti-anxiety drugs
• Use of hearing masks and other devices that can help block high-intensity or damaging noises
• Use of sound-producing machines like radios, fan and others that can also help relieve tinnitus during bedtime
• Meditation or other de-stressing techniques. Stress is found to make tinnitus worse so it should be avoided.
• Reduction in caffeine intake since it is also one of the factors that worsen the symptoms.
• Cutting out intake of aspirin or aspirin-based products and other drug. Aspirin, quinine and aminoglycosine—a potent anti-infection drug—are known causes of tinnitus as well.
• Biofeedback, a treatment method that feed back psychological information to patients through the use of a monitor. These feeds are consisting of information that patients are normally unaware of.
Tinnitus is also caused and made worse by hearing loss. And so to avoid this distracting ear condition, your ears must be always protected from loud or harsh noises that can damage it.
