How to stop snoring - try these steps:

Certain people tend to be likely to snore, so check if you fall into any of these categories:

being overweight
drinking alcohol regularly
using medication
having an allergy
having a blocked up nose
smoking

If any of the above apply to you, then by changing your lifestyle, you could lessen the amount that you snore. It's not easy to cut down on smoking, eating too much or drinking too much, but if you do not only will you perhaps stop snoring, but you'll be healthier as well.

There are different types of snorers, so it's best to find out what type of snorer you are and then you could choose the right type of anti snore device to help you. There's so many remedies available that it's wise to choose the one most likely to help you.

There are a few tests you can do yourself to try to find out what kind of snorer you are. Try doing the following:

A Mouth-breathing Test.

Make a snoring noise while your mouth is open. Now try to make the same noise with your mouth closed.
You are what is termed a "mouth breather" if you can only snore with your mouth open.

A snoring mouth guard, strips over your mouth or a chin strap for snoring would help in this case.

A Nose Test.

Press the side of one nostril until it's closed, while you're looking in the mirror. Breathe in through your other nostril while your mouth is closed. If you find that the nostril tends to close or collapse, try propping it open with part of a match stick while you do the test.

If you find breathing is easier like this, then the answer to your snoring problem could be nasal dilators. It's best to check both nostrils.

Tongue Test.

Open your mouth and stick your tongue out. Next, try and grip it between your teeth. Try and make a snoring noise. If you've managed it and the snoring is quieter while you're tongue is forward like that, then you could well be a tongue-base snorer. This can be managed with a Mandibular Advancement Device, (MAD).

Finding out whatever is causing your snoring and whatever type of snorer you are, will be the first stage in getting help. Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder which you may want to rule out with your doctor. You could try buying an anti snoring pillow which are shaped specifically to enable smoother breathing.

Surgery to stop snoring can be discussed with your doctor but it's best to try alternative methods first. You can buy herbal remedies to help, a stop snoring mouthpiece, a snoring chin strap, and nasal clips.

Ear plugs for snoring are available for your partner to use if the noise of snoring is becoming a nuisance. Find out more about why snoring happens : There is a lot of help available online from the British Snoring & Sleep Apnea Association and the Mayo Clinic.
