Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that millions of Americans suffer from. The disorder causes you to stop breathing repeatedly during the night. There are new ways to reduce or completely remove symptoms. This article will tell you how to treat sleep apnea.

Do you suffer from headaches, a dry or scratchy throat, and drowsiness throughout the day? Or, do you wake up frequently during the night gasping and choking? These are some of the symptoms of sleep apnea. If you answered yes to these questions then it is time you fix your sleep apnea to improve your sleep.

The first way to help treat your sleep apnea is to clean up your lifestyle to live healthier. This involves quitting smoking, exercising, eating right, and reducing your alcohol intake. One of the main causes of sleep apnea is weight because fatty deposits gather in the back of your throat making it harder to breath. Live a healthier lifestyle and you can remove the fatty deposits.

You also need to change how you sleep at night. Avoid lying on your back while you sleep as this causes fatty deposits in your throat to close your airway. Most sleep apnea patients can get a more restful night's sleep if they avoid sleeping on their back but rather on their sides.

Next, you need to talk to your doctor about a couple of different medical options. First, ask them if a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine and mask would help you. This equipment is the most effective way to treat sleep apnea as it keeps the airflow moving through your respiratory system as you sleep.

Another thing you need to consult with your doctor about is whether surgery may be a possible option for you. If you have yet to have your tonsils or adenoids removed than this is a possible option to help alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnea. Another new surgery which is less invasive involves fat deposits in the back of your throat being removed or stapled.

As you begin to attempt to treat your sleep apnea it is important that you continually communicate with your doctor about any changes, positive or negative. By communicating with your doctor you will allow them to help identify what is working best for you to further improve your treatment.

There are ways to reduce or completely remove the symptoms of sleep apnea, allowing you to get a better nights rest. Follow the information in this article on how to treat sleep apnea and you can be getting better sleep in no time!
