She'd informed her superior standing in for hers that she was through with it. A few minutes later a barking order summoning her to appear in his office came through the intercom. Natasha went. She returned shaking like a leaf and crying. Her boss had run her down because of the letter she'd written. Paul, one of her colleagues took the letter and read through. A look of surprise and total disbelief was stamped boldly across his forehead. "Natasha, i can't believe you wrote this" he said softly. What she had feared the most had finally befallen her! Reading and writing are two sides of the same coin. Reading helps you to access the message the writer intends to pass across to you and writing the vice versa of it. It is true that some people can speak the English language to a large extent or are even articulate, however it is also painfully true that some of this earlier class of people can't write in a logical, constructive manner void of grammatical pitfalls. Writing skills are important, especially if you desire to be placed on a salary scale in a company (private/public), government parastatals, NGO etc. It's important even when you want to climb the career ladder, with various professional exams (written) needed to take one to the next level. The bane of the problem goes back to their foundational years in the educational terrain. Lack of access to A- list English books (especially the foreign ones), unqualified teachers and the high influence of indigenous language, can overtime affect the written communicative skills of an individual. Reading "relevant books" enhances your writing skills as you learn first hand from the author, the writing techniques and words deployed in effectively passing across the message. Learning new words, their meanings and when to use them, learning the rules of grammatical structure will aid in improving your writing skills. When you read fiction or non-fiction related books, magazines, newspapers (on line /print), your writing skills will improve for the better. You can also get private tutors to help, or get books by professionals on the internet who specialize in such areas or simply engage their services. It's simply a matter of personal development and the determination to write constructively void of grammatical pitfalls. So long… auggiepo@yahoo.com
