Time management is essential to life. Time is valuable and should not be squandered. However, it is a reality that everyday all of us are guilty of wasting time in some way. Whether we hit the "snooze" button too often in the morning, or get distracted by our Blackberry too much during the day, it is a reality that all of us could be more organized and more productive.

Today's world offers many distractions and the effective time manager knows that obstacles have to be navigated successfully in order to not get caught up with the minutiae and stay on task.

There are rules that must be followed when implementing time management skills into your life.

First, take the time to be organized and plan your day. Remember the saying, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Well thought out plans are done by people who know what they have to do to succeed. This could be something as simple as organizing your calendar or as complex as coming up with a flow chart to complete a big project at work. Whatever you are hoping to accomplish, make sure you document it and stick to a time management system or software that works for you.

Next, set your goals and understand what you want to accomplish. Just as you set goals for your life or your career, use this method for what you want to accomplish in a time management plan. Remember, goals are achieved at a higher rate when they are written down and updated.

Another idea that will help with time management is to learn how to prioritize. This is one of the areas where people fail in time management because they are not able to determine what is most important and what is least important. Develop a "flagging" method, or assign tasks numbers like 1, 2, and 3, or letters like A, B, C, to determine what is a priority and what is not. Train yourself to do the A's before the B's and so on.

Finally, take a look at your to-do list and make sure that necessary items are on it. Many times, people fail at time management because they try to do too much and when they do not cross off enough items from their list, they abandon it completely, leading to additional disorder and decreased productivity. Make sure your to-do list is manageable every day in order to feel a sense of accomplishment and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Time management is an art as well as a skill and someone who is successful in this area tailors it to fit their needs.
