Growing old is inevitable. And as much as we would want to skip that phase in life, the more that we will be headed that way. If we think it will never happen to us, think again because in the peak of our life and our health, unimaginable as it can be, we will need nursing home care. Circumstances change; in fact, it is the only thing that is constant in this world. A facility that offers nursing home care may be also called a nursing home or a skilled nursing facility. It has a registered nurse that is available 24 hours and who will constantly provide care for those who can no longer handle themselves physically, mentally, or emotionally. A licensed doctor is also available who will supervise the need for each patient with medical care. The nurse or the doctor or a medical professional will always be on the premises of the Florida assisted living facility. Each facility would offer skilled medical care or the basic routinary custodial care. Routinary day-to-day activities compose the custodial care. When these tasks cannot be handled by an elderly, service from Florida assisted living facility offers nursing home care. Help would be in tasks such as taking a bath, dressing up, grooming one’s self, using the toilet and cleaning, washing the clothes or laundry, even eating, or just moving around. These are applicable not just for the elderly but also for those who are recuperating from a recent disabling injury but only temporarily. While they will need help as they are still gathering their strength back, they also need time for independence. Long-term custodial nursing home care would also be applicable for those patients who suffered from a chronic condition, cannot function independently, and are bedridden or bed bound. A constant supervision by a registered nurse would be better to avoid incurring more injuries. The nurse would see to it that proper nutrition and hydration is maintained to avoid skin breakdown and total body failure. There are cases in the Florida assisted living that a resident given custodial care becomes ill or injured. He/she will be in skilled medical care for a period of time, then returns to custodial care. Skilled medical care would include services such as wound care after major operations or surgeries. It covers the services by a trained professional following an injury or an illness. Other nursing home care services by the nurse include the administration and monitoring of an intravenous fluid antibiotics or the changing of dressing for surgical wounds. A physical therapist would be needed for patients who have difficulty walking or moving around to correct strength and balance disorders. For patients who just suffered stroke, a speech therapist would help regain his communication ability while an occupational therapist would offer assistance to help one relearn personal or self-care.
