There are a plethora of different hair loss products on the market that claim that they work. However, not all of them work. This tends to make many people suspicious of these products. One of the many products on the market is Duasteride. There are many people who want to know is Duasteride effective and how does it work. Finding out the answer to the question is Duasteride effective can be a lot easier than with a lot of other hair loss products. Duasteride is the generic name for Avodart. This is a drug that was originally designed to help treat BPH or enlarged prostate. The great thing about this is that the hormone that attacks the prostate, DHT, is the same hormone that causes hair loss in androgenic alopecia (pattern hair loss). Duasteride was originally FDA approved to treat enlarged prostate. In 2002 it was FDA approved. It is not approved for hair loss. Another drug along these lines that was originally designed for enlarged prostate is Propecia. Propecia is now FDA approved for hair loss. However, many scientists think that Avodart is a better drug for this because it treats both types of DHT a person's body may secrete, where as Propecia is only designed to treat one of these. Even though we know the answer to the question is Duasteride effective, there are still downsides to this treatment. The first is that it is only really effective at treating genetic hair loss also known as pattern hair loss. Another downside to this is the fact that it is really only designed for women. Some of the components of this drug can cause serious birth defects and therefore this medication is not recommended for women. Another downside is that there are several contraindications for Duasteride such as liver problems and even prostate cancer. This medication can even cause a man to suffer from side effects such as sexual problems. A man will also not be able to give blood for at last six months after stopping this treatment as the drug can be passed on to another and can cause serious problems for them. Is Duasteride effective? The answer is yes, when used to treat pattern hair loss in men. This is not the only hair loss treatment out there. There are many other products available. Even for treating the same type of hair loss. The cool thing about Duasteride is that it is not even really a hair loss drug, but happens to work better in many cases it can work better than the other hair loss treatments in androgenic alopecia. Keep in mind though that genetic hair loss is only one cause of hair loss and may not necessarily be the type of hair loss that you have. The only way to tell is to get tested and examined. This can help you come up with the best course of action for you. This is why it is a good idea to see your doctor if you are concerned about hair loss.
