Addictions are not formed overnight. An addiction connotes a mental habit of becoming attached to something on which you have become dependent. We commonly think of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, coffee etc. to be objects of addiction.
You can be addicted to Gambling, Impulsive Sex, Video Games, Watching TV all day, chatting on the phone. There are lots of things you do that you can't stop yourself doing and these are all addictions. If you do any of the things are you real attached to on a daily basis, it can lead to a large amount of disappointment and possibly depression.
I think any teen who uses Marijuana, while this is probably not life threatening in and of itself, should receive at least some form of Drug Intervention. I say this because he's probably too young and vulnerable to realize that he's already starting to lose his chance at a real bright future and great career. Too many stories I hear of drug users who trash their dreams for a bowl of Mary Jane.
As a parent it is your responibility to guide your children down the straight and narrow. You don't want the state to house him later and you certainly don't want the streets to raise him into adulthood right? So my point is if you get him help I feel that's the right thing to do. A teenagers addictions will eventually grab a stronghold around them and make them feel like they are in their own self-created prison.
So giving into addictions of any sort prohibits you from really being free. So although a teenager might FEEL like a Long Term Drug Intervention will trap them, in reality you are giving him the keys to life as he can't envision it right now.
