Is there a cure for Chlamydia well yes there is and Chlamydia is very easy to treat once it has been diagnosed. Antibiotics such as Doxycycline and azithromycin are simply prescribed which kill the bacteria in around 7 to 10 days. It is common for women who are pregnant to be prescribed Erythromycin as this does not contain tetracycline. A 7 day course is usually enough to cure the condition.

Why though if Chlamydia can be cured so quickly and easily are we seeing rapid growth of the condition? The problem is most who have Chlamydia don’t even know they have it as this is why it is known as the “silent disease”. It is estimated that 70-75% of women infected with Chlamydia have no symptoms and a significant proportion of men also have no symptoms.

When symptoms do appear in women they include:

· a minor increase in vaginal discharge caused by an inflamed cervix.

· cystitis (an inflammation of the lining of the bladder).

· the need to urinate more frequently, or pain whilst passing urine.

· pain during sexual intercourse or bleeding after sex.

· mild lower abdominal pains.

· irregular menstrual bleeding.

· a painful swelling and irritation in the eyes (if they become infected).

When men have symptoms, they may experience:

  • pus or watery or milky discharge from the penis
  • pain or burning feeling while urinating
  • swollen or tender testicles
  • 40 - 70 % of infected individuals don't haveanysymptoms!

If left untreated the condition is serious so if you have had unprotected sex then a test is strongly recommended! There are even many home test kits available so you don’t even have to suffer the embarrassment of visiting your doctor unless your home test is positive.
