Jock Itch, and What causes It?

The skin fungus that causes jock itch thrives in conditions where there is humidity and warmth; and what better place than the groin. Individuals who sweat, predominantly athletes, are quite prone to developing jock itch. The sweat washes off the protective oils from the skin and this allows the fungus to start growing. The excess sweat also makes the skin becomes soft which allows the fungus to spread from the front of the groin and all the way to the anus. Other individuals who are prone to jock itch are obese individuals. In these individuals the skin folds are thick and do not allow for proper cleaning or aeration of the groin.

Other individuals who are also prone to jock itch are individuals who have problems with their immunity or are diabetic. If the diabetes is uncontrolled, the fungus grows rapidly. Some individuals have an underlying eczema or dermatitis and continuously scratch the skin. This leads to a breakdown in the skin barrier and allows the fungus to grow.

Diagnosis: The diagnosis of jock itch is not difficult. Initially one may think of eczema or dermatitis or it is even mistaken for a sexually acquired infectious disorder. The physician usually obtains skin scrapping from the site and examines them under a microscope. This immediately gives the diagnosis. It is very rare for extensive studies to be undertaken to make a diagnosis of jock itch (unless the physician knows you have good medical insurance which pays for it). In rare cases, the scrapings are sent for culture to confirm the diagnosis.

The major problem with jock itch is that many individuals do not realize that they have a fungus infection. Almost every one will attempt some type of home care remedy or go to a health care store and buy some type of herb or ointment. In the majority of cases, people usually buy cortisone creams thinking they have eczema. Cortisone always makes the jock itch worse. If the symptoms worsen from the hydrocortisone treatment, one should go and see a physician. The condition may be embarrassing but it is definitely curable. The earlier you visit the health care worker, the less stress and aggravation you will have to go through.
