Medical malpractice is a serious matter that is an unfortunate common occurrence. When this happens, people should file a lawsuit against the responsible person or persons involved. Often times this means filing a suit against a doctor. Other people may have been involved too though. Sometimes a nurse or medical student may be at fault.

There are all sorts of terrible things that can be called medical malpractice. Often times it is because the doctor in charge made a mistake of some sort. These mistakes are sometimes small and only cause minor damage. For example, there are many medications that should not be taken together. Sometimes doctors unknowingly give their patients dangerous medications by accident. Although the side effects can result in death they are often caught in time and the patient merely suffers from allergic reactions. When a doctor rushes and is not paying enough attention and the patient suffers, then this can be very serious medical malpractice. A lawsuit should be filed against the doctor responsible. This is even such a common occurrence that doctors have insurance to help deal with this. Doctors have insurance to help when this occurs but other people in hospital do not.

When nurses are charged with medical malpractice it can be much harder for them. They do not have the insurance that doctors have. Nurses are not usually in charge of serious life or death treatment but still things can occur that could cause them to be charged with medical malpractice. More often however when they are charged with something it is negligence. If a nurse is in charge of making sure an elderly person is eating and getting through their daily lives and they instead leave that person to fester in their own filth then medical malpractice is an appropriate charge. Nurses though are sometimes in charge of patients’ medications. If a patient is supposed to get insulin shot everyday and a nurse accidentally gives them a shot of adrenaline then medical malpractice can be a more appropriate charge.

Nurses however are not usually given so much responsibility, and in our overworked health care system, medical students are often given more responsibility than they would normally have. Since these students are still learning things, they may make mistakes fairly often. They are supposed to have doctors looking over their work, but things can still get missed. For instance, a med student may not ask for a full medical history. This mistake can lead to misdiagnosis and then medical malpractice. It would be the student’s fault for not doing as the doctor had said. It is also their supervising doctor’s fault, but both might not necessarily get charged with medical malpractice. However, although they are medical students, there are some basic things that they could still get charged for.
