KATRINA THE MIDDLE-AGED BITCHby Sabby Bharathan
‘God Keanu, why can't you do things without questioning or saying after five minutes every time you have to do something?' Katrina asked her son. ‘Why is it always me though there are other people in this house?' Keanu replies.
‘Yes there are, but as you don't seem to notice very conveniently, that your dad is working on the house , your brother is ironing his clothes for work and I am in the middle of cooking and so my dear grumpy son you are the only one who is listening to music. If you ask me for way too long since this morning after breakfast may I remind you honey?' ‘But mum I only have these few minutes before I go and revise. Can't it wait until after I have my break?' Keanu tries again. That was just the goading Katrina needed.
‘Break...Break? I will give you a break…some people do not have breaks for almost twenty-five odd years. Since I married your dad I have not had a single break…I am constantly under pressure to do everything starting from making breakfast, taxiing you and Marco to school and work, then going to work, coming home to do the cooking, dance and song practise, puting clothes to wash and so on. Then do I have a break over the week – ends? No it's impossible when you have to do the grocery shopping, paint the garage door, the garden gate , the back door, change the linen then make sandwiches for your brother to take to work, iron the clothes, you name it I have to do it. I have had it up to here, do you hear?' ‘So don't talk to me about breaks, just get on with it, Keanu'
Katrina feels bad later after Keanu had emptied the dishwasher. What is it with middle-aged women is it their hormones or are they just fed up with life? She ponders on women her age. Most of us seem to be miserable. Is it just the thought of life passing you by without any major achievements? On the other hand, is it simply that we have been there ...done it philosophy. Does the age give us a licence to be rude to people and not be able to worry about it? Mmm…it is possible. Not all middle-aged women are like that though are they? Some of them are just bloom into their middle age so to speak. This is the age when most women with grown up kids do other things, beside work and chores.
Just recently, Katrina had gone to pictures to see a film with her sister in law and thought it was the best thing, as she does not usually get that time to spare. It made her realise that life is not just work, work and more work…it includes the play as well which most mothers tend to forget as their family takes precedence to anything they do irrespective of work, chores or socializing. The balance is incredibly important; it not only relaxes you but also gives you some calmness and peace, which you would not get otherwise.
We have only one life given to us by the Almighty God, because after this life we cannot complain about the life we have had to God as it rests with us to do what we want and can - in life. He is not responsible for our happiness. He has given us everything we need in this life to make ourselves happy and if we have messed it up it is our own fault. So do not let life pass you by… enjoy it to the full.
Take a chill pill and do not become a middle-aged bitch!
