Monitoring Equipment Information Making a Safe Procedure Even Safer <!--br--> Sedation dentistry is an extremely safe thing to have done. Each year millions have some form of sedative that helps them relax at the dentists' office. With the help of modern medical equipment, sedation dentistry is even safer by allowing the doctor to watch your vital signs in real time.
While you are resting peacefully under sedation your dentist will monitor your heart rate, blood oxygen level, blood pressure and ECG. They might also have a dedicated assistant present to make sure your airway stays open and listens to you breathe to prevent choking or gagging. The dentist is aided in their task of keeping you safe by advanced vital sign monitoring equipment. This machine can monitor all of your essential vital signs at once, display them on an easy to read screen, and even play an alarm to alert the dentist that something is wrong. These machines make the dentist's job easier by allowing him or her to adjust the concentration of dosages of sedatives before you show signs of discomfort. These machines allow your dentist to more precisely administer the medicine to provide a safer and more pleasant experience.
What is Being Monitored? <!--br--> The equipment monitors you ECG and heart rate through multiple leads placed on your chest by your dentist or the dental assistant. The vital sign monitor can track all of the leads at once and displays your ECG and heart rate on the screen.
/?cid=26&cat1=276&cat2=199&cat3=0&level=2&id=199#3" To monitor your blood oxygen level, a clip will be attached to your finger with a red light shining on it. This red light can detect the amount of oxygen in your blood stream by the amount of light that is reflected back. It will display your blood oxygen level on the screen. To monitor your blood pressure, a standard blood cuff will be fitted to your arm and hooked up to the machine before the procedure. The machine will periodically take your blood pressure during the procedure and display it on the screen.
All of this data is usually recorded and/or printed out at the end of your procedure so your dentist can add it to your medical record.
Vital sign monitors may be used for all levels of sedation but are always used for /?cid=26&cat1=288&cat2=208&cat3=31&level=3&id=31" I.V. sedation.
The monitor requires no needles and is a completely pain free and effective way to keep you safe during your trip to the dentist.
