I'm going to keep this reasonably simple, a company that does the PR work for one the medical facilities I was forced to use in search of saving my own live did a press release that pretty much sums it all up, I will copy it here, I will also copy from my own mail, mail sent to certain news publications and their responses in my attempts to thank those responsible for my continued being and will also copy them here, as I do not have enough words to express my gratitude to these fine human beings. My other articles will tackle every other aspect of medicine, treatment and illness as I seek to prevent anyone having to follow my route and pay as high a price and come so near to death. Should anyone need more medical info please contact me at my mail ebook.marco@yahoo.com

The bugs that almost killed me

Craig Marucchi is thankful for the help that saved his life!

Johannesburg, Wednesday, October 17, 2007 “I’m sorry, you have a brain disorder which is progressive; it attacks the central nervous system, and eventually, it will kill you.”

This was the shocking news that Craig Marucchi received two and a half years ago. A fit 28-year-old, the owner of his own animations company, which he’d started for a change after years with National Intelligence, Craig had gone to see the doctor because he’d been having some strange symptoms: heart palpitations, dizziness and tremors, especially when he got upset or annoyed.

The diagnosis was accompanied by the ominous words, “There’s very little we can do for you”. But over the next eighteen months, the doctors would do their best, a best which was severely compromised by the fact that Craig had been given a completely incorrect diagnosis - how utterly incorrect, he would only find out after a period of what can only be described as hell.

Because the diagnosis was wrong, Craig was given the wrong treatment, and much of what happened to him was a reaction to the treatment. “At one stage, they gave me a drug that is used to treat patients with bipolar disorder - which made me vegetative. I was literally drooling!”

In the interim, as the mystery disease progressed, Craig suffered two strokes, and had three operations as a result. “They thought there some clotting in the brain, so they opened up my head to see what was going

on,” says Craig. Unfortunately, they couldn’t see what was really going on, which was, as it turned out, something that reads like an old-fashioned horror movie.

Meanwhile, there was some obvious fallout in Craig’s working life. He was simply unable to cope with running the company, and had to find someone who could take it over. “I saw a lot of infighting, I had money stolen from me, I was defrauded - people acted as if I was already dead,” Craig says.

• Turning the corner

Then one day, Craig’s girlfriend happened to take him to the Medicross Family Medical and Dental Centre in Centurion. The doctor there suggested that he was deteriorating too fast, and maybe he should do a little more investigation.

About four days later, Craig had a seizure in his kitchen, fell, and cut his head on a piece of glass. “I ended up seeing the same doctor at Medicross. He was very gracious, very helpful, as I have since found all the Medicross doctors to be. And he gave me excellent advice.”

“In the ensuing months I used the Medicross Family Medical and Dental Centres around South Africa as a crutch to keep going. Without fail they were all compassionate, caring and well informed.”

Craig set out to find out more about what was happening to him. He used his newfound friend at Medicross as a sounding board, someone who was able to steer him in the right direction at a time when Craig was, by his own admission, willing to try anything. The Medicross doctor saved him from some lunatic treatments: at one point, for instance, a certain medic wanted to raise the pH level of his blood to 8.1; Craig discussed this with the Medicross doctor, who told him this could be fatal!

Eventually, a concerted quest turned up the real answer: bugs! The simple but ghastly cause was identified by a doctor at the Pretoria Academic Hospital, where Craig is now receiving treatment.

“During my intelligence days in greater Africa, I had somehow managed to become infected with no fewer than five different parasites. One I ingested, another bit me, and three of them they don’t even have names for yet!” Among these parasites was one that settled in Craig’s brain stem, laying eggs there and clotting the works.

“It’s actually very simple to deal with through medication, although I am still hemorrhaging a little,” says Craig. “Basically, in the last three months I have finally, finally got all my faculties back, although my short term memory is shot.”

Craig credits his friends at Medicross for his recovery. Whether it was advice or treatment for pain, he says, his every interaction with the doctors in the group was positive and helpful - and ultimately, was the reason he managed to find an answer and a cure.

Now, this slightly battered young man aims to take time off to “resolve my life”, he says. He will spend two years on this new quest before going back to work - a quest which includes, says Craig, “sitting by a Japanese lake”. And, that dream of peace is one that he surely deserves to turn into reality!
