For swimmers, the ability to jump into a pool right in their own backyards is the ultimate convenience. Lap pools can grant them this convenience, with the added benefits of having a shape tailor-made for swimming laps, providing a good substitute for the experience of a competitive swim, right inside one’s own home. Lap pool dimensions are anywhere between 1.8 m X 15 m, and 3.6 m X 25m. The larger lap pools can accommodate two swimmers simultaneously, while the 25 m length perfectly simulates Olympic laps. Lap pools can also be heated, provide water spa effects, be used for aqua therapy, or just to have some fun in the water. Though the cost of lap pools makes them something of an elite addition to one’s home, for the competitive swimmer, or someone fond of the clear-cut lines of avant-garde architecture, it is invariably worth the price. The total area taken up by the pool is called the “footprint”, which is slightly greater than the lap pool dimensions by themselves. One reason why lap pools are becoming exceedingly popular is that a rectangular space can provide much better space utilization than the traditional oval or rounded swimming pools. Thus, lap pool dimensions of, say 1.8m X 15m, make for much better swimming and land area utilization than a round pool with the same area of 27 sq m. Sometimes, people may want the lap pool to serve as an embellishment to the aesthetics of their house, rather than accommodating the largest possible lap pool that could fit into the land around their houses. For families who love jumping into the water together, a lap pool can also be L-shaped, with the short arm of the L being broader, and perhaps with a shallower section for the benefit of children. The lap pool, therefore, is not only a wonderful piece of equipment for competitive swimmers, but is also a wonderful addition to one’s home or backyard.
