Though often thought of as requiring a special effort and being a monumental struggle, a long distance relationship has just as much of a chance to turn out successfully as any other relationship. Some of the challenges of a long distance relationship may include: 1) not having the ability to see one another on a constant basis 2) not being afforded the opportunity to be intimate whenever you choose 3) a great amount of trust is demanded Trusting your partner is one of the harder concerns that couples in long distance relationships have to contend with, due to the distance and not being able to see each other. You may wonder "Is she seeing anyone else?" or "Is he partying every night?" Developing trust is not a quick process, as it is a complex issue. Suspicious fears and emotional outbursts can ruin an otherwise ideal and vigorous relationship. It is not easy to overcome the worries and tension when there are miles between the two of you. When starting a long distance relationship, it helps to understand the realities of the difficulties that lay ahead. It makes it easier if you go into the relationship with the notion that each person is free from wrong doing and is trustworthy unless there is proof to the contrary. However, if you begin to experience doubts and insecurity, and question your partner each time they go out for the evening or do not return your call right away, the tension between you will not help the relationship survive successfully. Even though you are apart from your significant other, you still need to live your lives! You both should naturally maintain a social life and be happy with yourselves. Because trust is a key component in a long distance relationship, it is important to have trust in yourselves and each other. Even though a long distance relationship demands a great deal more effort and attention than the traditional dating relationship, the benefits can make it worth the struggle. It may be helpful to view the long distance relationship as an opportunity to understand your partner and yourself with more depth and fulfillment. Deborah R. is a masters level social worker and enjoys helping people. Are you trying to figure out different ways to bridge the distance?
