Getting porcelain veneers can get quite costly, so it is understandable that someone considering getting them would want to know how many years they could expect their veneers to last. Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer to this question. No statistics have been gathered, so no number value can be applied. The best available answer is this: it depends how well you take care of them.
Under certain, and very unlikely conditions, a veneer could last a lifetime. Such conditions, however, are not consistent with the lifestyle of most people. Although veneers are insusceptible to decay and resistant to staining, they are just as prone to damage as normal teeth.
Common scenarios
While many veneers have lasted well over ten years, just as many have not. Most often, a veneer will crack, chip, break, or the bonding cement weakens and the veneer becomes detached from the tooth. In very rare instances, a veneer that has become detached will remain in one piece that can be reattached as is. Veneers are durable when they are bonded to the tooth, but are extremely fragile when detached.
Unfortunately, veneers do not lend themselves to repair. Dentists cannot simply glue them back together. In some cases where a minor chip occurs, dental bonding can be used to patch the chip. However, most broken veneers must be replaced with a new veneer. Keep in mind that dental bonding is prone to staining over time, so any patching done will eventually lead to inconsistent coloring.
What you can do to extend the lifespan of your veneers
·Practice good oral hygiene- this will definitely help keep your veneers in good shape. Failure to brush and floss regularly can lead to the buildup of certain bacteria that can cause the bonding cement to deteriorate.
·Avoid biting down on hard substances– Chewing on ice, hard candy, or other such substances will significantly shorten the lifespan of your veneers.
·Wear a mouth guard– If you participate in contact sports, or any activity that puts you at risk of getting hit in the mouth, be sure to wear a protective mouth guard. If you grind your teeth while you sleep, a mouth guard is essential. Neuromuscular dental treatment for TMD may be a good option for you as well.
