In the search for making the most out of the Law of Attraction, there is an underlying fundamental question that needs to be considered first: Do you live your life based on fear or love? The answer probably lies in both. The question really is, which one permeates throughout the majority of your life or in what areas of your life does fear have a monopoly? No matter how much you think you are positioning yourself to attract a certain thing, if your underlying subconscious actions or intentions stem from fear, you are actually causing a blockage to that manifestation. One of the most complete discussions on this subject is in the bookConversations With Godby Neale Donald Walsh. I recommend this read as a way to expand your perspective on the subject.

We’ve heard the concepts that “thoughts become things” and “what you focus on expands.” I find this to be true, but is it as simple as that? Sometimes yes, and sometimes no. The times that it is not is when fear is threaded through either your intention in some way or your actions and you are unaware of it. How do you know?

Becoming self-aware is not instantaneous. It’s a process of really knowing yourself and your willingness to be honest with yourself. The lies most of us tell, we first tell to ourselves, then we wonder why certain things aren’t working out the way we say we want. The universe conspires to give us what we want. The key, of course, is in really knowing what that is. Most of us think we know, but when we go into an in-depth honest exploration we can be quite surprised to discover something different. The reason for could be that we are calling in this other seemingly unwanted result through reaction to a hidden fear.

One of the ways to uncover a fear is to look at your results and work backwards. If you say you want a committed loving relationship with a romantic partner, but consistently wind up with commitment phobic individuals or partners who prove to be incompatible, then ask yourself why? Is it just because that what’s out there is so bad or is it a message you’re sending that you’re unaware of. Working from this direction, as an example, you may discover that perhaps your parents had a committed relationship yet were miserable, so really in your subconscious mind you fear a committed relationship because you equate it to misery. So your fear is that a committed relationship brings misery. Thus you don’t bring yourself a committed relationship because first and foremost you don’t wish to be miserable. Once you have this awareness you are able to make some different decisions, because now you won’t be ruled by a transparent subconscious belief. What that means is that consciously if someone were to ask you “Do you believe committed relationships lead to misery?” you would absolutely be certain that you do not believe that. However, when you peel away layers of what you cannot see, you discover that underneath it all lies this very old belief that you can’t imagine you hold – thus it is transparent to you – that indeed you have somehow equated commitment to misery. So now you know you have the fear. The next step is being open and committed to change and admit everything you see in yourself, to yourself.

The dimension of subconscious fear tends to confirm a more complex dimension to the Law of Attraction. To make it trickier, there are degrees of fear and love – a little fear with quite a bit of love, a lot of fear with a little love, etc. The key of course is to push through the fear and come straight from love – great love, like great success, involves great risk which means first facing your fears. In order to face something you must first be aware that you have it. Once you are aware then you need to accept your fear. Only through acceptance can you then make a change. Typically a change involves acting in spite of fear. That is the definition of courage. Once you find your courage then you can ultimately break through to the other side of your fear.

InThe Power of Myth, Joseph Campbell talks about heroes in stories being the ones who travel this adventure: “We have only to follow the thread of the hero path, and where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god. And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves. Where we had thought to travel outward, we will come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we will be with all the world.” He describes the hero’s journey: “To evolve out of this position of psychological immaturity to the courage of self-responsibility and assurance requires a death and a resurrection. That’s the basic motif of the universal hero’s journey – leaving one condition and finding the source of life to bring you forth into a richer or mature condition.”

This brings me to why I chose to write a story that, at its core, is a hero’s journey. The Last Machaca( ) excavates the fears of the two main characters, Michael and Lydia, and takes the reader on an international adventure while at the same time inspiring us to go beyond our fears and reach higher.
