In tough economic times, stress is high in most people's lives. Unfortunately, many forms of stress relief can be quite costly. If you're having a tough time meeting all your other financial obligations, how can you even consider adding another one - even if it is for stress relief?

We all know that exercise is a great way to relieve stress, preferably exercise done regularly. Gym memberships are great but can be costly especially if you have more than one family member who wants to go. Instead, try finding a great walking trail. Walk or run on a regular basis. If you can't tolerate the outdoor temperature or need to save on gas, borrow a walking DVD from the library. Now you will be able to do it in the comfort of your own living room.

Practice relaxing and breathing deeply to reduce overall stress levels. Go to your library and pick up a book on yoga or another type of breathing exercise. Learn a few exercises that work for you and really help you to relax. Then, whenever you feel the stress building up, you'll be prepared to breathe deeply and relax.

For many people, reading a book is a way of escape during times of stress. Whether it's a novel or a book on your favorite hobby, you can probably find it at your local library. Set up a regular reading schedule and forget about all your stress during that reading time.

Some people enjoy working outdoors in their garden or doing yard work. They find that the physical labor and just the act of being outdoors in nature relieves a lot of stress. Gardening does not have to be an expensive hobby. Concentrate on growing just a few plants. Watch for special prices on gardening supplies. The rest is up to nature.

Scientific studies indicate that stroking a pet is a very effective stress reliever. Obviously, going out and buying a new pet is not an inexpensive way to relieve stress. However, if you already own a pet, spend time playing with it and just petting it everyday. If you don't have your own pet, see if you can visit an acquaintance who has a friendly one or go visit a local animal shelter and visit some of the animals there.

Although providing for your children and dealing with difficult child raising issues can be frustrating, children can be a great stress reliever. When you're feeling stressed as a family, take some time to play a game that all of you enjoy. If you enjoy the outdoors, consider going to a local park and riding bikes, walking, etc. You can learn a lot about dealing with stress just by watching younger children. They enjoy life and don't worry about what's going to happen next. See if you can emulate them--at least for short periods of time.

Stressful times will come and go during the course of your life. Start adding some free or low-cost stress management techniques into your life before you get all stressed out. You will find that you will be able to handle the stressful times in a much better way.
