Infertility is not always a female problem. Approximately 30% cases are due to male infertility, 30% female infertility and the remaining 40% unexplained causes of various factors involving both partners.
In general, the male fertility process involves the production of healthy and mature sperm and getting the sperm to reach and fertilize an egg. Some men become infertile mainly because of abnormalities and defects in the male reproductive system.
Causes of Male infertility
Potential causes of male infertility are:
1. Complete absence of sperm
2. Low sperm count
3. Abnormal sperm shape
4. Problems with sperm movement
5. Sperm that is completely immobile (necrozoospermia); the sperm may be alive and not moving, or they may be dead
6. Problems with sperm delivery, due to sexual dysfunction, an obstruction, previous vasectomy, or retrograde ejaculation
7. Problems with erections or other sexual problems
Symptoms of Male infertility
Signs and symptoms of testicular problems can include the following:
1. Masses that are visible through the scrotum (requires physical exam)
2. One testicle that is smaller than the other
3. Small testicles
4. High levels of FSH
5. Low or no sperm production
6. Abnormal sperm cells
7. Pain and swelling of the testicles
8. Difficulty urinating or ejaculating
9. Slightly enlarged breast tissue
10. Undescended testicles
Treatment of Male infertility
The treatment of male infertility depends upon the underlying cause. Several months to years of treatment are usually necessary to achieve fertility.
However, treatment is not currently available for all types of male infertility. As an example, there is no known treatment when the somniferous tubules have been severely damaged or are abnormal. These conditions include Klinefelter syndrome, micro deletions of the Y-chromosome, Sertoli cell only syndrome, and idiopathic infertility associated with azoospermia.
