Malignant esophageal cancer tumors can affect the health of patients leading to different health problems. The disease starts as a condition called as barrett's esophagus. About 90 percent of esophageal tumors are found to be malignant and they are only detected at later stages. Malignant esophageal cancer is spreading all over the world in huge numbers and in alarming rates.

Like various other types of cancer malignant esophageal cancer is not a hereditary one. Various other factors like diet or smoking too are not known exactly to cause esophageal cancer. Many believe that radiation of high doses is responsible for the cause of esophageal tumors.

Malignant esophageal cancer cells spread in three different ways in body. One way of spreading cancer is through tissues. The cancerous cells invade and destroy the normal tissues surrounding them. The next way of spreading happens via lymph system and travels via the vessels to other body parts. Malignant esophageal cancer cells also spread via blood where the cancerous cells invades the capillaries and veins and travels via blood to various other parts of the body.

The cancerous cells spread from the original or primary tumor traveling via blood or lymph to various other body parts resulting in a secondary tumor. The process of spreading from one place to another is known as metastasis. It should be noted that the type of secondary tumor is the same as primary tumor only the place of occurrence differs.

The treatment options can vary according to the cancer stages. For instance stage I cancer treatment can include clinical trials and surgery, stage II cancer treatment can involve chemoradaition (radiation therapy and chemotherapy), surgery, clinical trials of surgery and chemoradiation, stage III treatment too is similar to Stage II. Stage IV esophageal cancer treatment involves esophageal stents, internal or external radiation therapy, electrocoagulation or laser surgery, chemotherapy clinical trials and chemotherapy. Recurrent esophageal cancer treatment options can involve mainly on clinical trails based on new technology and findings and any standard treatment types for relieving the symptoms and for enhancing the patient's life quality.

Adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are unique malignancies of esophagus with various natural histories and various risk factors. The epidemiology of this disease has dramatically altered in recent years. Eventhough patients suffering from metastatic diseases might not be cured, symptomatic palliation with aggressiveness might be very appropriate. Some times certain esophageal conditions that exist before cancer can also be responsible for the increased risk of getting esophageal cancer.
