How many times have you heard someone say, "God said"? So, what do you do with that? Can you say God said the exact opposite? Sure, but then who's hearing God? The NECROLOGICAL pages of those who died believing that they heard God are voluminous. Some of the worst and most insidious statements are those "God said" phrases. Sigmund Freud put it this way, "When religious leaders claim that they have a mandate from God by way of divine revelation-- which is, of course, not subject to challenge- and when those same authorities claim to be the only ones authorized to interpret these revelations accurately, we must recognize that these claims are nothing more than hysteria in search of certainty." Certitude is the trump card of too many. I like John Shelby Spong who wrote, "To think of religion as 'revealed truth' is to invest it with the power to compel conformity and to enable nonconformists to be effectively silenced or to be ostracized." How sad such situations become: for the vanquished and for the conquerors. It's a lose-lose game in an environment that should be win-win. We all hear that inner voice from time to time: some quite often; however, we should not use such to take a power position over others. Hear to serve others. Hear to correct one's wayward ways. But don't hear to lord it over others or to benefit at the expense of others. Jesus showed us what a true mandate is really all about. It was in the garden where he sweat drops of blood (who was there I know not- but I digress) where the mandate of all mandates was firmly understood. Die for others. Don't kill! Love unconditionally! Now THAT is a mandate from God!
