Have you ever heard of the popular saying that it takes a village to raise a child? Well, It does not actually stop there. Much of the wisdom that we get throughout our lives comes from our personal 'village' - our group of contacts, friends, family and mentors, the people that we trust.

Back in the olden days, marriage advice for young couples would come only from their parents and grandparents, most of whom would end up having had longstanding and successful marriages themselves. They were eminently qualified to give marriage advice, and the advice they gave was always well taken and utilized. Of course, not every marriage was and can be successful, even back then - but most people will agree that marriages had a much better chance of survival a few generations ago than they do today.

These days, it may be up to us to compile our own marriage advice from various friends, family members, professionals, books and even marriage counselors. The good news is that there is plenty of advice available out there, and much of it is very good, helpful and relevent to our times. At the same time, it might also be a good time to question some of the traditional marriage advice that we have all heard about at one time or another. For example, you may remember that your mother or grandmother might have told you that you should never go to bed angry. The basic principle is sound advice - we should not hold grudges or hold onto anger as it can lead to resentment and uneseccary stress.

But, also taking this advice too literally has the potential to backfire too; as some problems can look more serious when you are tired. Sometimes just going to bed - even if you are still a little upset or angry - might be just what you need to regain perspective.

Here is a great little piece of proven marriage advice, though - always find a way to take time out for each other, just to be together and communicate, no matter how busy life gets. This small but easy investment in your relationship will pay off a thousandfold over the following years. One of the biggest problems that couples experience today is that they lose the ability to communicate openly and clearly with one another. They might even begin to feel like they have lost interest in each other and in the relationship, if communication is poor or becomes minimal.

The best pieces of marriage advice is all like that - not necessarily easy to follow, but something you can work at together over the years as partners. Marriage can be hard work and you will inevitably hit bumps in the road along the way, but you will generally get out of it what you are willing to put back in. And if we take the time and effort to build solid marriages, we might be well on our way to reviving the 'villages' of the past - strong, solid communities that may be a source of traditional wisdom.
