Mifepristone

Mifepristone, also known as RU 486, is used as an abprtion pill that is taken orally. It may be used after or before the 49 days since the onset of last menstrual period. This is a prescription based medicine and should only be used under strict medical supervision. It blocks the activity of the progesterone hormone secreted by the reproductive glands in the female body. For the same reason it is also termed as antiprogestational steroids. Besides that it may also be used as an emergency contraceptive, to treat brain tumors, endometriosis and help facilitate the delivery of new born. It does not completely terminate pregnancy. A surgery might be necessary as well. A doctor may prescribe you this medication before aborting fetus surgically. Another variant of the cheap Mofepristone is available as Mifeprex

Side effects of Mifepristone

It may cause heavy vaginal bleeding that may last up to 2 hours. It is also known to cause fatal vaginal infections. These two are the major and most threatening side effects of Mifepristone. Few other side effects include fever, pain and tenderness in lower abdomen, shivering, and high heart beat rate and unconsciousness. It may also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and weakness. Do consult your doctor is any of these symptoms don't go away. Due to excessive blood loss as a consequence of this medication, it may further deteriorate the condition of anemia patients.

Precautions to take

This is a prescription based medication and should only be used under medical supervision and as directed by the physician. Inform your doctor of any allergy to medicines like Mifepristone, misoprostol, alprostadil, hemabate, latanoprost or treprostinil. Let you doctor know if you are taking any other medication, supplements, vitamins or proteins. Do ensure that your doctor knows the medicines you are taking as otherwise it may cause serious reaction leading to fatal consequences. Special caution needs to be taken for hypertension, porphyria, neurotransmitters failures or any heart, kidney, liver or ling diseases. Make sure you complete all sittings of appointment as only the doctor can assure you that your pregnancy has ended. People around you should know that you are being treated with Mifepristone. It is also advised that you carry your medication guide with you all the time.

What needs to be planned before you start taking the medicine?

This is a very important medication which if not taken properly may even lead to patient's death. Hence it is very important that this medication be taken only under medical supervision and you plan the treatment with your doctor. The doctor will share the plan with you to which you would need to agree in writing. Owing to the seriousness, risk of side effects and complications it is advised that you only agree to the plan if you can actually stick to it, else ask your doctor for an alternate treatment methodology.

Can I take Mifepristone with other medicines?

Do not take Mifepristone if you are using blood thinners, anticoagulants, heparin or corticosteroids. Chemical composition of drugs taken together may react and affect the working of the drugs taken. Hence it is strongly advised that you let your doctor know if you take azole antifungal, ketoconazole, itraconazole, and certain macrolide antibiotics like erythromycin, rifamycins, rifampin, dexamethasone, St John's wort or anti-seizure drugs like phenytoin, phenobarbital or carbamazepine.
