Old age and infirmity doesn't mean that you have to stay confined to your room. Do you have minor mobility problems which prevent you from walking long distances or climbing slopes? These problems are quite common in old age, but you must not let them stop you from enjoying life. If you want to be as active as possible, you may want to give mobility scooters a try.

But First Exactly What is a Mobility Scooter?

A mobility scooter is very much like an electric wheelchair, except for the fact that it is designed like a scooter. In fact nowadays, they are becoming even more popular than motorized wheelchairs. The early models of mobility scooters were basically meant for indoor use only, but now, more powerful designs are available for outdoor use as well.

Designs and types

Mobility scooters mostly come in two basic varieties:

  • Scooters with three wheels (one front wheel and two at the back)
  • Scooters with four wheels (two each at the front and back)

Needless to say, four wheel scooters are more stable and safe than ones with three wheels. These scooters can also be classified into:

  • Front wheel drive scooters
  • Rear wheel drive scooters

Mobility scooters with front wheel drive pull your weight and drag the scooter forward. This is why they are best suited for flat surfaces and indoor usage.

On the other hand, scooters, with rear wheel drive trains, push your weight and accelerate the scooter forward. This helps you negotiate rough terrain and inclines easily. So, if you are looking for a scooter which you can use outdoors, go for a four-wheel model with rear drive capability.

Safety features

Most mobility scooters are equipped with standard safety features such as:

  • Anti-tip wheels both at the front and back.
  • Low center of gravity to prevent accidental roll-overs while you are turning.
  • Emergency brakes in case the main brakes falter.
  • Ergonomically designed seats to give you maximum comfort when driving.

Accessories for Your Electric Scooter

A mobility scooter is also usually packed to the hilt with added features and accessories. So, you can often get any of the following enhancements added to your scooter when you purchase it:

  • Crutch or cane holders.
  • Front and rear baskets
  • Headlights and taillights.
  • Overhead canopies, just like a golf cart.

Plus some brands even offer you a sidecar feature for accommodating an extra passenger!

Buying a mobility scooter is definitely a wise choice, because it allows you to lead life the way you want!
