Money and Happiness by Daniel Benjamin

The dictionary defines happiness as An agreeable feeling or condition of the soul arising from good fortune or propitious happening of any kind; the possession of those circumstances or that state of being which is attended enjoyment; the state of being happy; contentment; joyful satisfaction; felicity; blessedness. There is an age old question that we have always asked ourselves does money buy happiness for some it's a straight yes or no but let's take a closer look. The original question is flawed for many reasons one of which is this. Since happiness is a state of mind that arises from favourable events in our life can money buy some of these events? The answer is yes money can buy us houses, cars and other things that will temporally put a smile on our faces but the things that bring the most happiness like love; family and fulfilment cannot be purchased with money. The key to happiness is to understand that our general disposition towards life determines how happy we are. Joy is perpetual happiness it's simply a choice to be happy and make the most from life. To be happy in life we most become joyous people. People who simply who appreciate life and have the right balance and prioritise their lives effectively. One problem rich people have is they place too much value on the power of the money they have and don't appreciate the things such as family that can make them happy. The problem with financially struggling people is they see money as evil and don't appreciate that working at a job tirelessly and in many cases being absent from your family for many hours a week will not make you happy. The key is balance a happy family without financial security is doomed and financial security without a happy family is also doomed. The other factor to consider is the consequences of your actions. Society has attempted to control human behaviour via religion and moral standards and today we live in a very liberal society. But regardless if you are religious or liberal minded the one simple truth is our actions have consequences which affect our lives and that of others. Making ourselves happy selfishly for one moment will always lead to personal misery in the distant future. In closing id say that money cant buy true happiness buy it contributes to having a joyful and peaceful state of mind out of which many happy occasion will arise.
Make that decision to be happy today.
