Budget is the biggest factor in determining the size of your wedding. Is it possible to have a fabulous occasion on a small budget? Absolutely. The key is finding cost cutting measures that don’t sacrifice quality or damage relationships. Here are just a few ideas to get you started on the road to a wonderful wedding day for less money. Are you totally set on getting married in June? You can save an enormous amount of money by choosing a date in January, February, March, or November since these are the “off-season months” for weddings. Another tip in regards to the date is getting married on a day of the week besides Saturday. Evening weddings can be beautiful and cheaper on a Wednesday night rather than Saturday. Making or assembling the invitations yourself is an enjoyable way to lessen your costs. There are a multitude of design ideas online and in wedding magazines that can be imitated at a fraction of the price. Designer wedding dresses can really eat into your budget. Instead, consider renting a dress or borrowing from a friend. If you are only going to wear it once, why let it take up space in your closet? If you are certain you must have a designer dress for your wedding, try a sale. Most of the larger bridal shops have huge sales once a year where you might discover the dress of your dreams at a price you can handle. Even if you are getting married in the winter, shop for your wedding shoes at the beginning or end of summer, when white shoes are easily found on sale. Remember to shop in the late afternoon when your feet are swollen; you will definitely have swollen feet on your wedding day. Are you planning on tossing your bouquet? How about just picking one flower to throw? That way you can save on the expense of a duplicate bunch while still keeping your flowers as a memento. Decorations are an easy area to save money without skimping. For example, you can have empty vases on the tables with votives around them and then simply use the bride and bridesmaids bouquets in the vases. Dollar stores or Wal-Mart are great locations for candles and candleholders. The cake is another area that can take a large portion of your budget if you let it. Choosing a cake with different flavored tiers can save you money since you don’t then need a dessert table. Another option is to get a small cake for only the bride and groom and serve sheet cakes, cheesecake, cupcakes, or another dessert to the guests. Having a caterer that supplies everything (plates, glasses, linens, etc) can save you both the cost and hassle of finding you own items, but look closely at your agreement with your caterer to be sure you are not being charged for extras that you don’t need.
