The mother of the bride is the second most important female on the day of the wedding, therefore, she needs a special outfit. When shopping for the outfit there are a few key things to look for and keep in mind. The main goal is to avoid looking frumpy or matronly while still being comfortable and appropriate.

First, let's talk about the different types of mother of the bride outfits. Some options are a long or floor length dress, a skirt suit or a pant suit. You could wear a knee length skirt or dress but that really is not going to make you stand out. Regardless of which option you choose, the fabric needs to be fancy, not your everyday cotton or polyester. The best fabrics are soft, flexible fabrics like silk, satin, chiffon, georgette or crepe. To dress up the look, choose an outfit with some details like sequins, beading or lace.

If you are in great shape then you may want to choose a more form-fitting or body hugging style. The top of the dress could be strapless, have thin shoulder straps, be a halter style or have cap sleeves. For the woman who is a bit more self-conscious or modest, an outfit that gently skims the body is a good choice. If your are concerned about your upper arms then you can add a lace overlay, a sheer jacket, an organza shawl, a short bolero jacket or a longer hip length jacket. For those who choose to wear a skirt suit or a pant suit they can wear a silky camisole underneath the jacket.

Now let's discuss the color of the dress. The bride may want you to wear one of the colors of her wedding or to wear the same color as her bridesmaids. If this is the case, then choose the shade of that color that looks best with your skin tone and hair color. The color does not have to match exactly and will probably look better if it is a slight variation. Some other popular color options for the mother of the bride would be a neutral color like ecru, beige, champagne, bronze, silver, or gold. Rich, deep colors such as chocolate brown, bottle green, eggplant, navy, royal blue or deep purple are also possibilities. Just be sure to avoid wearing white, black or red, as they can send a negative message.

The season of the year, as well as the location of the wedding and reception, will also factor into the choice of outfit. For a summer wedding, an outdoor wedding or a beach wedding, you may want a breezy, flowing dress with a lightweight shawl and sandals. In the middle of winter, a lightweight wool fabric and faux fur collar could be a practical yet chic alternative.
