movemanSKG recently visited the beautiful market town of Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, to install a platform lift at the local council's new office and community centre. It enables wheelchair users to reach the first floor and keeps the building, which is both a workplace and publicly accessible, DDA compliant. Ashby Town Council spent over £500,000 developing the community centre, which clubs and organisations such as the Women's Institute use for meetings and activities. Leicestershire County Council also leases part of the centre to host its Community Opportunities programme, which trains people with learning disabilities and helps them to find jobs. Thanks to movemanSKG's Prestige wheelchair lift , less able visitors and council employees can move around the building independently. The two-stop lift travels 3.1 metres and features doors that open at the touch of a button. It also has a designated user control (DUC) system, which prevents unauthorised use. Town Clerk Colin Gay is very happy; "We have responsibilities under the DDA to make our premises accessible to wheelchair users. After consulting movemanSKG, it became clear that a platform lift was the ideal solution. Initially I had fears the lift would look ugly in the new building but these turned out to be groundless. It has a handsome cream finish and blends with its surroundings perfectly. It gets regular use and operates reliably." Prestige is a freestanding platform lift; it requires no wall or supporting structure. It carries loads of 400kg up to thirteen metres and features a large 1500mm x 1100mm platform, which comfortably accommodates a wheelchair user plus a carer. Prestige complies with the new Machinery Directive and has tactile push button controls to aid those with visual impairments.
