Everyone seems to have an opinion about smoking addiction and the methods used to quit smoking. While no single method works for everyone, there are a few simple facts that will be helpful to anyone trying to break their smoking addiction.

MYTH - Smoking is just a bad habit.
FACT - Tobacco use is an addiction. The U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline; Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, classifies nicotine as a very addictive drug. For some smokers, nicotine is as addictive as heroin or cocaine.

MYTH - Quitting is all about willpower.
FACT - Because smoking is an addiction, quitting can be extremely difficult. Fortunately, there are many treatment options available to those trying to quit smoking.

MYTH - If your first attempt to quit smoking fails, you will never be able to quit.
FACT - Most smokers make two, three, or more attempts before quitting smoking successfully. Don't give up. Do your research and try a different method.

MYTH- Cold turkey is the best way to quit smoking.
FACT - There is no one 'best way' to quit smoking because everyone is different. Current research shows the most effective way to quit smoking is by using a combination of methods. Counseling combined with nicotine replacement therapy such as the nicotine patch, gum, or nasal spray is an effective method for many. Your doctor or smoking cessation clinic is the best place to go for help in putting together a program that fits your mind, body, and lifestyle.

MYTH - It is expensive to quit smoking.
FACT - Smoking is expensive!! A pack-a-day smoker spends about $1,000 per year. If you can afford to smoke, you can afford to quit.

Treatment may cost $3-$10 per day for several months, and in the long run is much cheaper than continued smoking. Check with your insurance provider. Some of the treatment cost may be covered.
