Insomnia is a disease where a person is unable to have a good sleep. It is common in all age groups including small kids. Women suffer from this disease mainly during the period of their menopause. Consuming heavy meals or sweets or any kind of simulating beverages like tea, coffee or alcohol before sleeping should be avoided. Also, some of the common careless activities such as sleeping in bright light, reading or working while in bed need to be strictly avoided. Mental tension brought about by anxiety, worries, overwork, anger, bitterness also lead to sleeplessness. Constipation, dyspepsia, overeating at night, excessive intake of tea or coffee and smoking are among the other causes. Diabetes, lung and heart disease may also cause insomnia. So, it is advisable to contact a doctor before going for any of the below mentioned cure.
Other symptoms of insomnia are changes in the duration and quality of sleep, persistent changes in sleep patterns, memory lapses, lack of concentration throughout the day, emotional instability and loss of coordination and confusion. The drugs available in the market can cure insomnia only temporarily and also have lot of side-effects like liver damage. There are natural ways to treat insomnia. Some of these can be done at home with no supervision at all.

Taking a shower before bed relaxes the body and helps get a better sleep. Drinking a glass of warm milk with or without honey before bed is one of the best ways to prevent insomnia. It acts as a tonic and helps to relax. Roast a pinch of cinnamon and then boil it with water. Drinking this an hour before bed also helps a lot. Lettuce is highly beneficial in the treatment of insomnia. One tablespoon of lettuce seeds boiled in half a litre of water, till it is reduced by one-third, is also very helpful. Massaging milk or mustard oil on hands and soles of feet is also known to cure sleeplessness. Massaging curd on the head induces sleep. The hypnotic action of the herb rauwolfia has been known since ancient times and is also used as a sedative. These natural ways to cure insomnia have absolutely no side-effects and are 100% efficient. Acupressure and acupuncture too can cure insomnia.

The patient should make a good effort to eliminate as many stress factors as possible. This should include regular practice of any relaxation method or meditation technique; knowing the art of doing things slowly, mainly activities like eating, walking and talking; limiting the working day and the working week to five days if possible; cultivating a creative hobby and spending some time daily on it. ‘Yoga' has been proven the most beneficial form of exercise. Regarding the diet, the patient should take a low-salt diet as it interferes with a sound sleep. A balanced diet with simple modifications in the eating pattern helps a lot in the treatment of insomnia. The diet should exclude white flour products, sugary products, tea, coffee, chocolate, cola drinks, alcohol, fatty foods, fried foods and any artificial additives containing food.
