Insomnia is a common disease which causes sleeplessness and can be found in case of kids as well as adults and aged people. There are various factors which can lead to insomnia. In medical terms, the lack of melatonin is the main reason for sleeplessness. Also, depression, stress, tension or deficiency of important nutrients like iron or magnesium can cause insomnia. Women have the highest tendency to suffer from this disease during the period of their menopause. The above mentioned causes are not the only reasons causing insomnia. Diseases such as diabetes, lung and heart disease may also cause insomnia. So, it is better to contact a doctor before implementing any of the ways to cure it.

The person suffering from insomnia has to take good care of his health. Avoid consuming heavy meals or sweets before bed. Also try not to have any kind of simulating beverages like tea or coffee or any kind of alcohol. The dinner should be taken well before going to bed, this way enough time is given so that the food is digested and it doesn't cause any sleeping problems. Some of the common things and daily habits such as sleeping in bright light, reading or working while in bed need to be strictly avoided.  The time of sleep also has to be fixed.

There are various drugs available in the market which can cure insomnia but they have lot of side-effects in which the primary is liver damage and the cure is also temporary. Instead there are natural ways to treat insomnia. Some of these can be done at home with no or little supervision and some need professionals.

On a regular basis, drinking a glass of warm milk before bed is one of the best ways to prevent insomnia. Also, 2 spoons of honey with milk work wonders. Another way is to roast a pinch of cinnamon till it turns black and then boil it with water. Drinking this an hour before bed also helps a lot. But this cure is not recommended for regular basis as too much cinnamon is not good for health. Also, massaging mustard oil on hands and feet is an ancient method for curing sleeplessness. Putting lavender sachet or flowers near your pillow and applying lavender oil to the forehead also helps a lot. Listening to lullabies or soft music relaxes the mind and helps to sleep. Acupressure and acupuncture too can cure insomnia but they require professionals.

Also, mental exercises such as meditation help relax the mind from tension and stress which helps to have a good sleep. Breathing exercises or 'Pranayams' also are found to do miracles. Morning exercises are also very important. Jogging and yoga are the best ways to remain healthy and prevent any diseases. Recent study shows that ‘Yoga', the ancient Indian exercises have the highest potential to not only prevent but also cure almost all the diseases known to man. The most important point to keep in mind is not to worry if you are unable to sleep. Don't add to the worries which already don't let you sleep.
