Whooping Cough (Pertussis) is a bacterial infection of the lungs which is caused by a bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It is a very contagious disease which causes coughing with little or no fever. The coughing may be so severe that it leads to vomiting and aspiration. Causes of whooping cough includes infection from air borne bacteria. This bacteria is called as Bordetla pertusis. This happens due to close contact with other child who is suffering from the same. The bacteria affects nasal passage, lungs and respiratory tract. These areas produces thich mucous which is primarily aimed to fighting with the bacteria attack, the primary reason for the disease. Whooping cough occurs in two phases. In the first phase, an upper respiratory tract illness develops which is accompanied with fever, cough, and malaise. After a period of about two weeks the second phase of whooping cough starts, which is characterized by paroxysmal coughing. In this phase the cough is at a very serious stage and even 10 to 15 coughs may follow in rapid succession before a breath is taken, which is the characteristic high-pitched inspiratory whoops. Cough treatment using Onion The use of raw onion is valuable in a cough. This vegetable should be chopped fine and the juice extracted from it. One teaspoon of the juice should then be mixed with one teaspoon of honey and kept for four or five hours-it will make an excellent cough syrup and should be taken twice daily. Onions are also useful in removing phelgm. A medium-sized onion should be crushed, the juice of one lemon added to it, and then one cup of boiling water poured on it. A teaspoon of honey can be added for taste. This remedy should be taken two or three times a day. Whooping Cough treatment using Garlic Garlic is one of the most effective remedies for whooping cough. The syrup of garlic should be given in doses of five drops to a teaspoon, two or three times a day, for treating this condition. It should be given more often if the coughing spells are frequent and violent. Radish is an excellent home remedy for whooping cough. A teaspoon of fresh radish and equal quantities of honey and rock salt should be taken thrice daily. Certain home remedies have been found beneficial in the treatment of whooping cough. The most effective of these remedies is the use of garlic. The syrup of garlic should be given in doses of five drops to a teaspoon two or three times a day for treating this condition. Administer warm water enema.Ginger has proved beneficial in treating whooping cough. In 1 cup of Fenugreek decoction, add 1 tsp of fresh ginger juice and some honey for taste. You can prepare the Fenugreek decoction easily at home. In 250 ml water, boil 1 tsp of Fenugreek seeds till it reduces to half. The herb calamus is another valuable remedy for whooping cough.
