Cells grow normally and divide . New Lung Cancer Staging 2009 Chest They produce more cells as needed so our body stays healthy and can function.

However sometimes this process goes bad and the cells become abnormal forming more cells. Too many in a uncontrolled way. These cells form a mass of tissue called a tumor. These tumors can be benign {not cancerous} or malignant {cancerous}. Lung cancer occurs when a tumor forms in the tissue of a lung.

Lung cancer was the leading cancer causing deaths in 2008. Among men and women in the US estimated 215, 000 cases of lung cancer alone. It occurs most often between ages 55 to 65. More in men than in women.

There are 2 major types. Non-small cell and small cell. Each type grows and spreads differently and is treated differently also. Non-small is the more common of the two.

Small cell cancer is also called Oat cell cancer. It grows more quickly, and is likely to spread to other organs in the body. It may spread to the lymph nodes or other tissues in the chest, including where it originated. The organs it will spread to are the bones, the brain, or the liver. When it spreads from the lung to the brain it is then called "metastatic lung cancer" not brain cancer. Sometimes it's called by doctors a "distant disease".

Lung cancer would occur less without smoking. The good news is more people are quitting. Studies show in 1965, 42% of all adults were smokers. Now in 2008 only 21% do smoke. This has shown a large drop in cancer deaths in men, mainly because they do not smoke. The bad news is that those dropping rates of smokers have stopped declining these last recent years. Young adult smokers are increasing in the 1990's by 73%. Some downturn is shown in the past few years. More women are getting this disease than ever before and are dying from it! Many of the smoking education programs now focus on women and young adults for people who smoke.

Second hand smoke is responsible for a large number of cancer deaths in the US each year. Yet cigarette smoking is the primary cause of lung cancer, 90% of people have developed this because they smoke cigarettes. If you smoke you are at a much greater risk than those who never smoked. To just stop greatly reduces your risks, and after you stop the risk drops by 90%! Ten years after you quit the risk drops by 50%. This does not mean that the risk is eliminated.

Cigars and pipes also are a risk for this cancer. Even if the smoker does NOT inhale.

This is a great risk of mouth and other types of cancer. Also this relates to how long the person smoked, the number of cigarettes or cigars a day and how deeply the smoker inhaled. There are studies to search for ways to cure lung cancer. A person should quit. It is never too late! Think about it!
